I've been looking for concise & accurate approaches to what H. Rittel called "wicked problems". There aren't many. Arguably, the best ideas I've found are by Vinod Goel's 1995 book "Sketches of Thought" published by MIT Press. But here I'll add links to sources that depict some of the "wickedness" of innovation problems:

In the end, it's all about re-interpreting problems from a systemic viewpoint in order to acknowledge all of the complexities involved. And once we understand all of the elements, their interactions, the contextual and time factors, then the second challenge is to simplify the problem (tame it) just enough to actually specify an intervention that has the desired impact.
