Some of the "rapid-prototyping" applications I've seen are rather meaningless. People use sometimes the ZPrinter to build models of geometries that would be considerably easier to develop with conventional tools.
Fortunately, there are lots of examples of really interesting applications of digital fabrication:

It does take time to understand new technologies, one would expect to find more interesting and meaningful uses of rapid prototyping machines as they are incorporated into the design process.
